Timothy Snyder, a history professor at Yale University, is skeptical of Republican candidate Donald Trump’s attempts to distance himself from the 2025 Project Playbook, following backlash over some of its proposals.

The extreme policies outlined in the Heritage Foundation’s right-wing document—which was written by dozens of former Trump aides—are widely seen as the agenda Trump will pursue in his potential second administration.

On Sunday, MSNBC’s Ali Velshi noted that it was a “difficult task” because “they went out and wrote everything they were going to do, and then Donald Trump came to these rallies and told people, ‘I’m not involved in this, I don’t agree with a lot of this.’” “It has nothing to do with me, which is actually part of what authoritarians do sometimes.”

Snyder, an expert on authoritarianism, agreed.

He explained that Trump “hopes that his people will believe him, no matter what he says.” “It’s part of an authoritarian dynamic where you can lie to your people and then say something completely different the next time and they nod and say, ‘Oh yeah, I knew that all along.’” means to be part of that kind of thing.

“Transformation is fundamentally a scam,” Snyder continued.

He added: “Trump has no transition team other than the ones who helped write the 2025 plan, and he has no transition plan other than what’s written in Agenda 47 and Project 25.” “That’s it. That’s it. There’s nothing else. He can try to rename it but… it’s quite clear what he stands for” with proposals to “destroy the federal government,” replace experts with Trump loyalists and destroy the administrative state.
